December 4 - Notes from Jane
Well yesterday was an action packed day for the kiwis with Sarah-Jane, Rachel and Freyja all in action. First up in Solo Dance Sarah-Jane and Rachel did their compulsory dance. Both girls skated really well and performed awesomely. Sarah-Jane looked very strong on the floor and gave great performances in both dances earning her marks in the mid 7's. Rachel gave good performances, was fast and had good floor coverage. Final placings - Sarah Jane in 3 way tie at 11th with the break ended up in 13th and Rachel in 18th. Draw for the freedance today sees Sarah-Jane out 1st and Rachel out 6th.
Freyja skated a pretty good short programme. She was a bit disappointed in her skate as she felt she backed off a bit on it but still pulled out some good stuff abd she stayed on her feet. Missed the invert but did a lovely lay over instead. Two footed her triple mapes which was a shame as it had been going so well and also misfired on the combo spin but still finished it off with a great sit so all the elements were there. The marks were a bit disappointing compared with what came later and what others were doing and falling on. She is all fired up to skate a great long today. She is 6th out in her group.
It is actually a fine but freezing day here today in Portimao. We have had some spectacularly bad weather this week with thunder and lightening storms and torrential rain!!
Off to the rink now.
December 1 - Notes from Jane
Well day 2 of seniors. So far so good. Yesterday's training went well. Freyja settled well into her figures. Draw was group 2 left foot start which means LBO Paragraph loop. She spent quite a long time working on this figure settling it on the floor. This paid off as today's training went well and she was really settled on it. Hoping for a more settled free training today. Yesterday's free training had high points and low points. Freyja couldn't quite settle into things. Her usual favourite solid items weren't working well yeterday. Other things were working really well. Talking through the options it seems likely that a combination of untried wheels didn't help greatly so she is going back to her usual combination. She is finding the floor fine to skate on so is confident to go back to her usual wheels.
Solo Dance training went really well. Rachel suffered from a few nerves to start with in her compulsory training but settled in and found her feet. Sarah-Jane had a good solid training on compulsories and both girls finished off with good freedances.
Competition starts tomorrow with Ladies figures in the morning and solo dance in the evening.
Pam and Emma P have left us and are winging their way home. They were delayed in Lisbon with bad weather in Germany and when they eventually landed in Munich it was snowing. Kasey has left with her parents to enjoy some time in London and LA before returning home.
The weather in Portimao continues to be inclement with pouring rain one minute and bright sunshine the next. 18 degrees feels like 10 to this Aucklander!!! It is definitely not warm!
November 29 - Notes from Jane
Sorry haven't been near email in the past few days. Junior week now finished. The girls all skated well and performed their socks off. While not all achieving the results they would have liked they can be proud of their peformances as they all skated really well.
Where did I last leave you.... Kasey skated a relatively clean short programme. A few toe stop landings but a good solid skate from her left her in 24th. She followed this up with a relatively solid skate in her 4 minute.. Unfortunately she didn't have the content of most of the other skaters but what she did she did skate pretty well. Gives her a base to work from now for future Worlds. Final placing 24th. Well done Kasey.
Salome and Emma were unfortunate to draw 1st and 2nd respectively to skate in the freedance. Its always preferable to draw a little later in the group especially when you are placed high in that group. Both girls performed really well and looked great on the floor. Final placings Salome 18 and Emma 19.
Juniors finished with a party for them on Friday night.
Seniors start tomorrow.
I have been to the draw today. Freyja 26 in figures. There are 35 competitors. 4th to skate in free. Sarah-Jane will be 17th and Rachel 18th to skate in solo dance.
Training for them at the practice rink has been going well.
A bunch of the team journeyed to Spain yesterday to take in the sights of Sevilla which was fun in the pouring rain. However a great day including a stop at the market town of Loule in Portugal was enjoyed by all.
Ciao for now
(haha mixing up my languages)

Hiya
Well first day of competition is over. We have slept and woken up to ..... would you believe sunshine!!! Junior Ladies figures - 30 skaters (Indian skater out as she didn't turn up). Both girls were a bit nervous but skated well. Final placings - Emma 20th and Annelise 29th. Event won by Germany with USA 2nd and Italy 3rd.
In the Junior Solo Dance - 20 skaters both girls skated really well in a strong field. Salome in 16th and Emma in 20th after the compulsories. Draw for todays freedance has Salome out 1st and Emma skating 2nd.
Kasey starts her skate today with Junior Ladies short programme this evening as well.
We are hoping to see Rachel at some stage today. They left NZ on Monday, had their flight cancelled Lisbon - Faro and so had to overnight in Germany last night. Hopefully she will be with us tonight. Freyja arrives tomorrow.
Cheers

NOTE FROM : JANE REASON
Well first day of training been and gone. All settled on floor well which is good. Floor started well during the day but did deteriorate as the day went on. Figure girls went well. Emma settled quickly and worked well. Annelise took a little longer with first World nerves but eventually settled and was putting good figures on the floor. Both seemed happy when they finished. Kasey did well in her long programme training. To start with she was over trying things but soon settled and got into her work. Some things were just not working but she perservered and overcame them. She was happy with her training. By the time the evening session came the floor had got alot slipperier. They hadn't done a scheduled floor clean during the day which didn't help. Emma settled on her greens although still finding the floor a bit slippery. Salome worked through a couple of wheel options eventually also going to all greens. She too was still finding the floor slippery and had backed off the power. However by the end of the training both girls were settling into it and putting better performances on the floor. Freedance training for them was much better and they looked much stronger, more relaxed and settled.
We have woken up to another beautiful, rainy day in Portimao. Just returned from the 2nd Junior Ladies Figure training. Both Emma and Annelise put good sets of figures on the floor this morning. Both very settled and happy with the way things are going. Well done. Back off to the rink shortly for Kaseys short programme training and we have opening ceremony tonight.
Adios from Portugal.

Report from Jane Reason from PORTUGAL
November 21, 2010
Well we have arrived safe and sound in Portugal. Our long haul 40 hour flights took their toll and we arrived here just after midnight on Thursday night local time. Our first flight on Air New Zealand took us up to San Francisco. Pretty bumpy crossing of the Pacific really but nice new plane with movies showing in the back of your seats etc. Pretty full though so no room to stretch out and sleep. My seat was right next to the blimmin toilet .... great sound effects all through the night and queues of people banging my seat all the time!! Really glad to get off in San Francisco. Once we got there my first job of propping up the Lufthansa counter trying to organise boarding passes for some of us who weren't given them for onward flights in Auckland (coz we were the wrong class!!!) and four who hadn't had their luggage checked all the way through. That took awhile and then back through the intensive USA security ... yes shoes off everyone and full body scans and to Lufthansa for the flight to Frankfurt. That was a killer. Completely full. Not a spare seat to be had! Arrived in Frankfurt to a very chilly 6 degrees!! We did our usual spread out and lay around in the boarding gate for our 3 hour stop over there. Said goodbye to Margaret and Leigh who took off for Porto and we were off to Lisbon. 3 hours later we landed in Lisbon for a 6 hour stop over. Jetlag starting to kick in we eventually make it on to the plane for the hop skipand jump to Faro where we land to a completely empty terminal (everyone has gone home). Fortunately our rides are there to meet us and transport us the 63kms to Portimao. Check in is very smooth at the hotel.
Rooms at the hotel are lovely. Very spacious. Have their own kitchenette complete with microwave and jug etc. All ground floor. Waking up the next morning to grey cloudy skies, open the curtains to find very nice boats parked outside the window in the marina!! No shortage of money out there! The breakfast room overlooks the water and is very picturesque as well. Breakfast is a full on cooked buffet which is great. No shortage of food there.
The training rink is an adventure ... about 30 mins away in a town called Silves. We hired a van to get us there. So far our GPS system has taken us about 3 different ways to get there and keeps trying to take us down streets that end in dead ends etc. I don't think it has been updated recently!! However we are finally getting the hang of it. The kids are getting their skating legs back today. In between training times today we climed up to the castle that overlooks the township of Silves and had a look around. It had an awesome view. We have also been to the stadium and had a look at the floor today so another thing crossed off the list. Registration and draw for the Juniors tomorrow.
Weather ... well we have a saying in Auckland that we can have 4 seasons in one day ... here in Portimao it seems like they can have 4 seasons in 1 hour!!! It is cold.
ooooooo
Congratulations to the 2010 New Zealand Artistic team to compete at the 2010 World Roller Figure Skating Championships
