2008 New Zealand Championships

Congratulations to all who skated so well

There was some really great skating over the week and some fierce competition. Congratulations to all the medal winners.
Great to see Tiny Tots making such a splash with 3 competitors in figures and 7 in freeskating. Congratulations to Mercedes Carrascosa of Mt Wellington who took gold in both events with Laura Keir (Tokoroa) and Michaela Steiner (Upper Hutt) silver and bronze in the figure event and Pheonix Reid and Caelan Allen (MSSC) taking silver and bronze in the freeskating.
Primary events saw Brooke Fuller and Grace Washer both from Hawera take the top 2 slots with Grace winning the figures and silver in the freeskating and Brooke winning the freeskating with silver in the figures. Stevie-Lee Dawson (MSSC) won the bronze in freeskating. We had 2 Primary Boys this year both from MSSC with Andrew Mercer taking gold and Reagan MacMillan the silver. Well done.
Juvenile Girls events saw a drop in numbers this year however the competition was keenly contested. Kegan Elmers from Nelson winning gold in Figures and silver in freeskating and Chelsea Snow (Hawera) taking the gold in freeskating. Hannah MacMillan (MSSC) won the bronze. Mercedes Carrascosa (MtW) capped off a great Nationals for her taking the gold in the solo dance event.
Elementary was a well contested grade. Annelise De Cleene (MSSC) cleaning up by winning figures, loops, solo dance and creative solo dance grade. Tara Westwood had a well deserved win in the Freeskating. Kyra Thomson (UH) and Bronte Giles (Tok) filled 2nd and 3rd placings in the freeskating and reversed with Bronte having silver and Kyra bronze in the Figures. Kyra also took silver in both the solo dance and CSD events with Nicole Hone (New Plymouth) the bronze in solo dance and Tara Westwood the bronze in CSD. In the boys events Shea Keir (Tokoroa) won gold in the freeskating and also gold in the Novice Mens Figures. The Elementary Inline was won by first time competitor in this event Brooke Hume (Nelson). The Junior Inline freeskating event was won by Nicole Silver (MSSC) and Rosie Carter (UH) in 2nd.
First time skaters in our Novice events showed they will do well in the future. Louisa Reid (MtW) won the freeskating and solo dance. Sarah Mays (Auckland) won the figures and the bronze in the solo dance event. Maia Broughton-Edwards (MSSC) and Rosie Carter (UH) took the silver and bronze in freeskating with Claudia Steiner (UH) silver in solo dance and Danelle Mercer (MSSC) silver and Nina Donkin (MSSC) bronze in the figures.
Youth events were dominated by Meg Barber (MSSC) who won gold in both figures and freeskating. Tayla Gaskin (MSSC) silver and Nicole Hone (NP) bronze in the figure event and Nicole securing silver in the freeskating with Angela Heley (MtW) the bronze. Angela went on to win the solo dance event with Vanessa Bowden and Angela Pratt both from Upper Hutt taking silver and bronze.
In the Intermediate events Kelsi Linney (UH) took gold in the Figures from her team mates Tanya McCarthy 2nd and Michelle Crosby 3rd. In the freeskating it was the turn of Anna Harris (MtW) taking the gold with Tayla Gaskin and Katerina Wisnewski (MSSC) taking the silver and bronze. Solo Dance saw Evelyn Harris win the gold from her Mt Wellington team mates Rebecca Bilyard (2nd) and April Geers (3rd).  In the CSD event it was the turn of Kasey Murdoch (Nelson) to win the gold from Evelyn Harris silver and April Geers bronze.
Raewyn Hailes (UH) gave polished performances to win the Classic Ladies Figures, solo dance and CSD events.
Returning to skating this year Trudy Pocock (Cambridge) gave a great performance to win the Masters Ladies Figure title from Eileen Mills (Hastings) in 2nd and Paula Boulcott (UH) in 3rd. Not to be outdone Paula's husband Roger took the Masters Mens Figure title with Bill Hancock (Hastings) in 2nd and Basil Jones UH) in 3rd. Joanne Hutton (Rollerland) once again showed her dominance of the dance events by winning the Masters Solo Dance and CSD titles from club mate Estelle Swaney who took silver in both events with Truday Pocock taking the bronze in the solo dance event and Joanna Miller (Auckland) the bronze in the CSD.
Cadet was a tightly fought grade. Sarah Reason (Auckland) showed her class winning the figures again this year with a hugely improved Salome Molano (MSSC) taking silver and Emma Patrick (UH) taking the bronze. Tessa Halcrow-Webb (UH) continued her winning form with gold in freeskating with newcomers to watch Kate Spencer (MSSC) and Kasey Murdoch (Nelson) winning silver and bronze. Emma Hazelwood (UH) and Macarena Carrascosa (MtW) stepped up to tussle it out in the Cadet solo dance events with Emma winning the compulsory from Macarena with Emma Patrick (UH) in 3rd and Macarena turning the tables on her with a stunning performance of her Jive winning the gold in the CSD event. Macarena also won the female Oscar for her performance in this event at the Special Awards evening. Emma took the silver and Salome Molano (MSSC) a well deserved bronze. Oliver Ewert (UH) won the mens events in Figures and loops with very consistent performances. Courtney Snow (Hawera) won the Open loops with Kate Spencer and Salome Molano both from MSSC taking 2nd and 3rd. In the advanced loops Emma Patrick (UH) took the gold for the 2nd year in a row from Rochelle Putt (Hawera) and Emma Hazelwood (UH). Cadet Dance Pairs champions are Nika Thomson and Oliver Ewert (UH).
Our Junior World Class ladies Alyssa Longville and Samantha Reason both from Auckland showed their dominance in their events with Alyssa taking gold in the figures, freeskating and solo dance events and Samantha taking the silver in all three events. Not to be out done Samantha's younger sister Sarah Reason with a step up to a higher grade this year gained 3rd in the Junior Figures (Open) event and in the Junior Solo Dance. Emily De Cleene (MSSC) stepped up to the bronze medal in the Junior Figures (National) event with Laura McKenzie (UH) taking bronze in the freeskating.
The Senior events were completely dominated by World Class skater Sarah-Jane Jones (UH). She showed in her class in winning the Ladies Figures, Freeskating and Solo Dance events as well as taking out the International Inline Freeskating event cementing her position as the top Artistic skater in New Zealand. Close on her heels in the figure event was World team member Genevieve Mercer in 2nd and Freyja Phillips taking bronze in her first year in Senior. In the freeskating Freyja skated a fantastic long programme to finish a well deserved 2nd to Sarah-Jane with Mareta Conroy (MSSC) in 3rd place. In the solo dance event Renee Mouat (MtW) who recently competed at Junior Worlds and has now stepped up to Senior pushed Sarah-Jane all the way eventually settling for the silver with Rachel Melrose (Rollerland) a well deserved bronze. In the Inline event Nika Thomson (UH) showed she will be stepping up in the future taking the silver with Laura McKenzie (UH) the bronze. Rozanna Longville and Duane Trembath (Auckland) gave extremely polished performances fresh from their return from Worlds to win the Senior Dance Pairs events. Rachael Parkinson and Philip Turner (MtW) their fellow World team mates won the silver medals in both events. Both couples have now announced their retirements which is a shame and they will be missed.
