Skate New Zealand (or the New Zealand Federation of Roller Sports) administers the sport in New Zealand in the three disciplines of Artistic skating, Precision skating and In-line Speed skating.
Two related disciplines of Roller Hockey and In-line Hockey are affiliated with Skate New Zealand for the purposes of international competition and for receiving assistance from national funding agencies.
Roller sports have been officially organised in this country since 1937 and New Zealand has competed in World Championships since 1955.
Today, roller sports are a major form of recreation for many young New Zealanders. Competitively, the three disciplines within the Federation are organised by 26 clubs throughout New Zealand.
Every January, the best speed skaters converge on the centre that has been chosen to host the New Zealand Road and Flat Track Championships. Around one hundred athletes vie for national titles in this 5 day event showing the top skaters from around the country.
In July the New Zealand Artistic Championships are held. More than one hundred and fifty athletes vie for national titles in Figures, Solo Dance, Couples Dance, Freeskating, Pairs skating, Precision, Quartet and Show Skating. All will have qualified for the event by competing in their own Area Championships held the previous October.
The skaters attending these events range from children as young as five, competing in their age-grade through seasoned international skaters in the senior and open grades to older skaters in the masters events.
